Toll Text Scams: Unpaid Toll Messages

How it works

You get a text saying you owe a small unpaid toll (often a few dollars) and must pay today to avoid a "late fee" or losing your license. The link goes to a fake site that looks like a real toll agency and steals your card details. The FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center warned about these texts in April 2024, and they've spread since.

Red flags

To check, don't use the link. Go to your toll service's official website or app yourself, or call the number on your account statement.

If you already paid

Act fast. The FTC's advice depends on how you paid:

Watch for "recovery" scams. Anyone who contacts you offering to get your money back for a fee is likely another scammer.
